About us...

Tchai-Ovna is part of a Global community of conscientious tea lovers & growers.

Working alongside small farming cooperatives in India, Japan, & Vietnam allows us to source the worlds finest teas & spices with traceability & integrity.

Our story began in 2000 when our owner, Martin, opened a teahouse inspired by the cajovnas of Prague. Over 20 years of serving tea and putting on all manner of events in an offbeat, bohemian premises in a former stables, Tchai-Ovna became a well reowned institution on Glasgow’s cultural map.

Having now made the transition from hospitality to wholesale, online retail & travelling chai wagon, we continue to seek out excellence in ethical tea standards.

The knowledge and expertise that we have gained over all these years shine through in the sheer joy of a top quality cuppa.

Below, are some examples of the growers and cooperatives we are proud to work alongside…

Wild Grown Tea from the Mountains of Northern Vietnam

Green Bridge is a tea producer’s cooperative comprising indigenous tribal people in and around Lao Cai and Ha Giang, a mountainous region which borders Yunnan, the southernmost province of China. The Red Dow and Hmong people have long been tea experts, foraging exquisite leaves which grow on ancient wild growing tea trees scattered across woodland slopes. They know what to pick, when to pick and how to bring out the full potential of the tea leaf through traditional processing techniques, handed down through the generations. Just as important, the indigenous people know and respect the landscape in which they live and work. We feel blessed to have been working closely with Green Bridge since 2018 to bring you just some of their magic.

Organically produced Teas from Miyazaki and Kagoshima's province

The Morimoto's on their organic tea farm, Japan

Miyazaki and Kagoshima are on the southern most tip of Japan, a seawashed pristine landscape which is as serene as it is vibrant, at least in the world of tea. Here small families such as the Morimoto’s, Hayashi’s and Watanabe’s have been cultivating tea for generations, using a combination of their deep knowledge and time honoured methods with innovative techniques to keep a tea tradition not only alive but forward thinking. They work as a cooperative so tea lovers as far away as us in Scotland can source directly from them and enjoy the sublime creations with which we have fallen in love with at first sip.

Tonganagaon Tea Garden in Assam

It could be said that nowhere else in the world of tea is there a more controversial region than Assam. Tea produced in Assam tends to be malty with floral notes and strong bodied, which is why it is the number one component in most teabag blends; a success and rightfully so. The flip side is, however, that the vast majority of the plantations are run by large corporations with their roots firmly in the British Empire (Brook Bond is perhaps the best known). In effect, these companies indenture the local Assam people’s labour and have very little regard for the environment. Like the Chai Walla’s of India, we use Assam extensively in our chai blends, and so it was very important to us that we find a tea garden which aligned with our values, humane working conditions and high quality without costing the planet.

We feel very proud to be directly involved with Tonganagaon, which is not only an Organic and Fairtrade registered tea garden but it produces some of the best quality Assam we’ve tasted, malty, full bodied, almost caramel hints, and a pleasant floral nose. We also stock their high quality second flush Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe which reveals all the nuances that might be lost in a recipe grade equivalent.

Mr. Joseph in Tamil Nadu - Cardamom Farmer

Mr Joseph trimming a cinnamon tree on his farm, Kerala

One could say that our cardamom is our secret ingredient, but we do spoil it a bit by shouting from the rooftops that we have the best cardamom ever! Green cardamom is the quintessential ingredient in our chais, and it is very important to us that we always have the best cardamom we can possibly find because this is indeed what makes our chai so tasty. Just as vital for us though is that we source it ethically. Our lucky stars aligned when we met Mr. Joseph, a small independent cardamom grower who practices exclusively organic cultivation in the remote foothills of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. We benefit greatly as we get the freshest organic, essential oil packed cardamom, and Mr. Joseph benefits because he gets to set his own price and harvesting schedule without having to compress his prices on the Keralan Spice Exchange. We love this truly sustainable relationship.
