A gaiwan bowl has been the preferred method of brewing delicate green and white teas in China since the 14th Century, although it can be used for brewing any kind of tea. It is often used as a teapot and teacup in one and lends itself to multiple infusions of the leaves.

This particular gaiwan set is made from Yixing clay, also known as zisha. It is known for its mineral richness, slow heat conduction and, due to its being porous and unglazed, ability to ‘memorise’ and therefore enhance the taste of tea that is drunk from it over long periods of time. For this reason, many people prefer to drink only one kind of tea from each pot or bowl.
