Growers all over the region are adopting sustainable farming practices to keep the earth healthy and keep their tea delicious.
The Legacy
In the 1850s, before tea was commonplace in India, a visionary local Sikkimese man named Phurpu Tshering, with guidance from Chinese tea experts, planted the first tea bushes at Phoobsering. These original bushes still thrive today, standing as living testament to the dedication and skill that have shaped our beloved Darjeeling tea.
Sustainability in Darjeeling
For the last 50 years, the growers of Darjeeling heavily relied on chemical fertilizers to sustain crop yields from the aging tea bushes. This approach resulted in diminished soil fertility, raspatory problems for tea pickers, and polluted waterways. This, combined with the effects of climate change (droughts, floods and increasing temperatures), meant that the farmers of the region really started to struggle.  In 2017, much of the region’s tea estates recognized that the only solution to the adverse effects of chemical fertilizer, is to wholeheartedly transition to organic farming. Trees and hedgerows are now planted regularly to prevent flooding and soil erosion. These hedgerows also provide a habitat for pest predators, promoting a diverse ecosystem for the leaves to thrive in. The revitalization of the land ensures a sustainable environment for future generations of growers and tea drinkers alike. Things appear to be going in the right direction.
The Difference of Darjeeling
