The Environmentally Sustainable Practices of the Morimoto Family Plantation

The Morimoto family, true artisans of tea, are small independent growers located on Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost island, in the Miyazaki prefecture. They specialize in organic tea cultivation, using a variety of cultivars (sub-species) to create teas with nuanced, characterful flavours. Remarkably, Kyushu produces up to 80% of Japan’s organic tea!

In the face of climate change, tea producers like the Morimoto family are adapting with resilience. By cultivating a diverse range of cultivars, each responding uniquely to climate challenges—some thriving in dry conditions, others in wet—they ensure the continued production of exceptional tea in an economically and environmentally sustainable way.

We are truly honored to offer teas from the Morimoto family. They are not just tea experts; they are passionate stewards of the environment they work in.

The History of Sencha

While tea has been a part of Japanese culture for many centuries, Sencha leaf tea has only been cultivated since the 16th century. Tea seeds were first brought to Japan as early as the 8th century CE, as gifts from Chinese Buddhist monks. They were initially a privilege reserved for religious classes, who would crush the leaves into a powder.

China eventually transitioned from powdered tea to drinking infusions of whole tea leaves. As this method spread across East Asia, whole leaf teas like our Sencha Okumidori gained in popularity, due to their ease of preparation. This made tea much more accessible to the broader population.

Today, Japan still honours its powdered tea heritage with Matcha, which is used in traditional tea ceremonies and modern delights like Matcha Latte (see links at bottom of text to check out our matcha varieties). However, it is Sencha that has become the predominant tea there, accounting for over 80% of Japan’s tea production.

Morimoto Sencha is a testament to Japan’s rich history. It encapsulates the care and craftsmanship of centuries of tradition, offering you tranquility and reflection in each cup.

Health Benefits of Sencha

Our organically produced Sencha is more than just a delicious cuppa. It’s a step towards a healthier way of life. Countless studies point to Sencha being a key ingredient in contributing to mental fitness and overall well-being.

Sencha is celebrated for its myriad health benefits

•    Alleviating stress, anxiety and promoting better sleep.
•    Mental well-being and cognitive function: Enjoy sharper memory and increased alertness.
•    Stroke Prevention: Green tea has been linked to reduced stroke risk.
•    Diabetes Management: It can help in both preventing and alleviating diabetes.
•    Heart Health: Regular consumption may help prevent heart disease.

The art of traditional steaming

The secret of Sencha lies in the traditional steaming process employed by the Morimoto family. By steaming the tea leaves for up to 20 seconds to halt oxidation early, they preserve and accentuate much of the tea’s natural goodness. This process not only retains its nutritional qualities, but also increases the concentration of certain compounds, such as caffeine and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). EGCG is a potent antioxidant, believed to be at the heart of many of the health benefits associated with green tea.

How this affects you…

A cup of Sencha provides a gentle boost of energy through the day, allowing you to maintain presence and focus, unlike the spike and crash pattern associated with coffee. Sencha’s  balance of caffeine and natural L-theanine regulates blood pressure and allows for a much higher quality of sleep.

Sencha connects us to a traditional practice, cherished for centuries for its promotion of longevity, calm and enhanced concentration. Buy our Morimoto Sencha today and harness all the goodness of an ancient and natural remedy.
