Pu Erh teas are unique in that the leaves themselves are fermented, in some cases for up to 30 years! This results in a rich, earthy taste, beloved of tea connoisseurs. Our Tuo Cha is a Sheng Pu Erh, meaning that it has been aged in a cellar in the traditional style, as opposed to Shou Pu Erhs, which use a more recently invented, speeded up process. Ours has been naturally aged for at least five years.
Production of Pu Erh teas reportedly dates back to the Song Dynasty (960-1,279 CE). Indeed, in 2023 UNESCO recognised Jingmai Mountain, one of the Six Great Tea Mountains of Pu’er region, as a World Heritage Site. It is said that the Bulang and Dai ethnic groups there have continued using the same production methods for over 1,000 years! Up until the 17th century, these and other kinds of compressed teas were used as currency.
Where Pu Erh really stands out is in its incredible health benefits. One of the most exciting ares in which it shows promise is in attacking cancerous tumours. Numerous studies have indicated its ability to kill malignant cells, including leukaemia, stomach, breast, oral and colon cancer. It has been suggested that this has to do with its anti-inflammatory effects, which have often been linked to improved management of the disease.
In Chinese medicine, Pu Erh has always been said to be instrumental in filtering toxins throughout the body. This would seem to be backed up by recent animal studies, in which it has been shown to decrease fat accumulation and increase the amount of fat expelled from the body in faeces, thus preventing it from being absorbed into the bloodstream. It therefore shows promise as a treatment for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, as well as being extremely helpful in assisting weight loss and reducing the risk of heart disease.
In addition, the fermentation process actually changes the chemical composition of the tea, increasing the presence of statins like lovastatin and the bioactive chemical theabrownin, both of which are known to help combat high cholesterol levels.
Pu Erh Tea is also said to aid focus and alertness. To this day, it is reportedly common practice for leaders and strategists to drink it when they need clarity of mind to focus on important decisions.
